Canadian Crime Writing

 

The Arthur Ellis Awards are open to permanent residents of Canada, or by Canadian citizens living abroad.

The Arthurs are presented in seven categories for books and stories, published in the previous year, in the following categories:

  • Best Crime Novel
  • Best Crime First Novel
  • Best Crime Novella
  • Best Crime Short Story
  • Best French Crime Book (Fiction and Nonfiction)
  • Best Juvenile or YA Crime Book (Fiction and Nonfiction)
  • Best Nonfiction Crime Book

An eighth category, The Unhanged Arthur for Best Unpublished Manuscript, is open to writers who are not published novelists.

Deadlines

The Arthur Ellis Awards Submission Rules for the current year are posted on September 1.

Unhanged submissions must be postmarked or courier dated by October 15.

Published submissions must be postmarked or courier dated by December 15.

Shortlist Events

Arthur Ellis Short List Events take place mid-April in cities across Canada: Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Ottawa.

Award Banquet

The Arthur Ellis Awards Banquet takes place in Toronto, usually the last Thursday in May.
