Eugene Meese was a reporter and editor at small dailies from Newfoundland to Alberta, covering everything from police to politics, writing everything from page-three court and council briefs to page-one breaking news and editorials. His freelance writing appeared in dailies across Canada. For 25 years, he taught newspaper journalism at the University of King’s College in Halifax.

His novel A Magpie’s Smile – a police thriller set in the oil-boom Calgary of the 1970s – was published in 2009 by NeWest Press of Edmonton. It was a nominee for the first Alberta Readers’ Choice Award and a finalist in the Best First Novel category of the 2010 Arthur Ellis Awards.
