Kay Kendall studied Russian history at the University of British Columbia, earning her Master’s degree and PhD (abd) there.  Born in Kansas, she is a proud dual citizen of the US and Canada and has lived half her adult life in BC and Ontario. Now Kay and her Canadian husband reside in Texas, where she uses her academic and work experiences in Vancouver, Ottawa, and Toronto as backgrounds for her mysteries set in the late sixties.  Her debut mystery, Desolation Row, takes place in Toronto, and the sequel, Rainy Day Women, moves from Toronto to Vancouver, with a brief dip down to Seattle.

Kay’s Austin Starr Mystery series features a 20-something Texas-born amateur sleuth who is surprised to discover culture shock in Canada when her American friends had said there would be none. Kay says, “The cultural and political differences between Canada and the US may be small—not on the scale of, say, Lebanon and Tahiti—but nevertheless those differences are real. In my writing I enjoy exploring those differences and hope to show American readers in particular that Canada is its own distinct nation—not the fifty-first state, for heaven’s sake. Murder and mayhem are my tools to do that.”
