Matt Hughes writes crime fiction. His alter ego, Matthew Hughes, writes sf. A personality fragment, Hugh Matthews, writes media tie-ins. His crime novels include Downshift (Doubleday Canada, 1997, and Five Rivers, 2012) and Old Growth (Five Rivers, 2013).

His short fiction has appeared in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, Isaac Asimov Science Fiction Magazine, Blue Murder, Fantasy & Science Fiction, Postscripts, Storyteller, Lightspeed, Interzone and a number of “Year’s Best” anthologies. Many of his sf novels and shorter works are crime fiction in an science fictional mode.

He has won the Arthur Ellis Award and has been short-listed for the Aurora, Nebula, Philip K Dick, A.E. Van Vogt, and Derringer Awards.
