Daniel Edward Craig

Daniel Edward Craig, author of the Five-Star Mystery series, draws on his years working in luxury hotels to delight readers with his hilarious behind-the-scenes novels set in the hotel business, where things are never as calm and dignified as they seem. His first novel, Murder at the Universe, which features the adventures of dedicated hotel manager turned house detective Trevor Lambert, was published by Midnight Ink Books in 2007. The second novel in the series, Murder at Hotel Cinema, was released in 2008, and the third, Murder at Graverly Manor, was released in 2009.

Craig began his career in the hotel industry in Toronto in 1987 and has since worked for ten luxury hotels across Canada in positions ranging from front desk agent to vice president. Originally intending to pursue diplomatic service, he has studied international relations, modern languages, film, screenwriting, and acting. His writing has appeared in national newspapers and in a collection of short stories published by Penguin Canada.

Most recently, Craig was vice president of Opus Hotels and general manager of Opus Vancouver, named one of top hotels in the world by Cond, Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines and famous for the celebrities that frequent it. Under his leadership, Opus gained an international reputation for exemplary service, cutting-edge marketing and unique design.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Craig has wanted to write since he was four years old, when he carried around a notebook entitled “Poims”. Over the years his spelling has improved, but it wasn’t until his career in the hotel industry was well established that he started his debut novel, Murder at the Universe. “They say write what you know, so I set my novel in a luxury hotel,” he says. “I naively thought it would be fun and easy to plot a murder mystery. Ten years later, it was finally complete. In my books I draw from some of the weird and wonderful people and bizarre situations I’ve encountered over the years. Of course, the murder part is pure fiction.”

Craig now works as a writer and consultant in Vancouver. He travels extensively, being particularly passionate about hotels, having stayed in—and worked for—some of the best in the world. His popular blog can be found at www.danieledwardcraig.com.

Selected Bibliography:

Murder at The Universe

Craig’s debut novel starts with a big bang when Trevor Lambert, dedicated manager of the luxurious Universe Hotel in New York, stumbles upon the dead body of the hotel’s beloved owner, Willard Godfrey ion the hotel parking lot, the apparent victim of a hit-and-run accident. When police suggest alcohol was involved and a hotel executive may be responsible, cantankerous VIP guest Brenda Rathberger, executive director of the Victims of Drunk Drivers conference, uses the controversy to grandstand her cause. She joins forces with celebrated TV anchor Honica Winters, who exposes the executives’ reckless behavior on national television. Meanwhile, fearing that Godfrey’s party-girl daughter will step into the role, Trevor and his colleagues vie for the position of general manager. In the resulting clash among pampered guests, harried employees and militant protesters, Trevor struggles to find the killer, to charm lovely duty manager Nancy Swinton, and to save the dignity of the Universe.

Murder at Hotel Cinema

After the tragic death of girlfriend Nancy, Trevor Lambert moves to Los Angeles to start a new life as manager of Hotel Cinema, the hot new boutique hotel with the tagline “High Drama in Hollywood”. At the star-studded opening party, guests are horrified when celebrity bad-girl Chelsea Fricks leaps off the balcony of her penthouse suite. Was it a reckless publicity, suicide—or murder? Chelsea stab wounds point to foul play, and Trevor finds himself at the center of a Hollywood murder mystery. Faced with prying media, a belligerent owner who treats the hotel like a family employment agency, and a detective more interested in star-gawking than in solving the case, Trevor is forced to step out of his comfort zone and into the spotlight. As he gets closer to discovering the killer, he revisits Nancy’s mysterious death and learns lessons about love, work, fame, truth, and coming to terms with one’s past.

Murder at Graverly Manor

Trevor Lambert is on the brink of fulfilling every hotelier’s fantasy: managing his own inn. In Vancouver, Canada, stands the perfect bed-and-breakfast, a Victorian mansion called Graverly Manor. But first he must impress the elderly owner, who swans around in ball gowns and spins tall tales of her royal bloodline. Lady Graverly won’t sell the manor to Trevor until he completes a probationary period as resident innkeeper for one month. Screams in the night, foul odors, and the sudden disappearance of a chambermaid have Trevor looking over his shoulder. Grim rumors of Lady Graverly’s husband, who disappeared almost fifty years ago, only add to the home’s eerie atmosphere. Trevor is dying to see Lady Graverly’s private rooms, but she refuses. What dark secrets is she hiding?
