Sylvia McConnell, publisher of Napoleon & Company, of which RendezVous Crime is an imprint, grew up in Winnipeg but took a degree in modern languages at the University of Toronto. After studying for a year in France and teaching for a year in Germany, she returned to Toronto to do an MA in European literature. She taught languages in Toronto high schools for many years, where she also obtained a certificate in school librarianship, and worked in her spare time as an editor on French language educational materials.
After 25 years of teaching, Sylvia felt the need for a creative change. In 1990, she set up Napoleon Publishing to publish children’s and young adult books, adding the RendezVous Press imprint for adult fiction in 1997 and RendezVous Crime in 1998. The RendezVous Crime series, a very popular series of mysteries by Canadian authors, is one that has produced many Arthur Ellis nominees and award-winners.
Sylvia is married to a writer and has a son who is a music producer for film and television. She lives in Toronto with her husband. Her dog, Josephine (Josie for short), who was Napoleon’s constant and loyal companion for 15 years, has now gone to her great award.
