MOTIVE Mystery & Crime Festival 2024 - Toronto International Festival of Authors

On Friday, June 7th to Sunday, June 9th, 2024, the Toronto International Festival of Authors is hosting MOTIVE, an annual literacy festival focused on crime and mystery.

From cozy crime to police procedural, psychological thriller to true crime, these page-turning genres have created some of the world’s best storytellers, who are much loved by readers everywhere. In addition to being widely accessible, these stories offer varied perspectives on the world around us, and keenly explore contemporary social issues through a captivating narrative.

Taking place at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre this three-day weekend festival will celebrate writers from Canada and across the world. Audiences will enjoy over 50 events, including in-conversations/interviews, writing masterclasses, and children and youth programming. Activities will take place indoors and outdoors at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre, along with online digital content to complement the live program.

CWC-HOSTED EVENTS & MEMBER OPPORTUNITIES

We are pleased to share that Crime Writers of Canada will be participating in MOTIVE by hosting several events this year. Dates and timing of the CWC hosted events are in the process of being finalized, however here’s what we have lined up.  Opportunities at this high-profile event are open to all CWC members across Canada and all CWC participants will have access to attend all the festival events that are on the pass system, however these do not include the Masterclasses as they will be ticketed separately. Please note, members will be responsible for their own transportation, parking, and accommodation expenses.

  • Time: Saturday, June 8th and Sunday, June 9th from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm.

CWC PAM’s will sell, sign, and discuss their books. We are looking for Professional Author Members to sell, sign, and discuss their books. The tent will host 15 authors simultaneously. There will be 2 shifts in the tent each day: 11:00am–3:00pm and 3:00pm–7:00pm. Over the two days, this affords an opportunity for 60 authors. (Each author will be responsible for their own transactional requirements when selling books.)

  • Time: Saturday, June 8th at TBD
  • Time: Sunday, June 9th at TBD

We are looking for Professional Author Members to take to the Festival stage and read from their works. We will have two 30-minute reading slots on the stage and each reading slot will accommodate 5 authors, for 5 minutes each. Over the course of two days, this affords an opportunity for 10 authors.

  • Time: TBD

Moderated by Jass Aujla (author of Next Of Twin), and joined by panelists Alie & Hejsa Christensen (authors of Stealing John Hancock) and Michael & Zack Urlocker (authors of The Man from Mittelwerk) will have an intimate conversation about co-author relationships and discuss the beauty and challenges of writing as part of a team.

We are looking for volunteers in the following capacity:

  1. 2 CWC Author Tent Co-ordinators: responsibilities will include setting up the tent with the provided tables, chairs, linens and CWC banners; welcoming and supporting the day’s authors; managing the afternoon tent transition; and troubleshooting as required.
  2. 2 CWC Stage Event Co-ordinators: responsibilities will include welcoming and managing the participating authors at the Open-Air Author Readings and the “Partners in (Fictional) Crime” panel discussion.
  3. 3 CWC Social Media Co-ordinators: responsibilities will include chatting with authors, taking photos at the Open-Air Author Readings and the “Partners in (Fictional) Crime” panel discussion, and posting/sharing on CWC social media accounts.
